The Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra (Las Cruces, NM) is searching for the next Music Director/Conductor to lead our orchestra and continue our mission to present and promote music of the highest artistic quality for the region’s enrichment and serve our community as a musical, cultural and educational resource.



The LCSO began in 1958 when a group of local musicians gathered to perform Brahms’ Requiem Mass. Three years later, in 1961, the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at New Mexico State University, merged the fledgling community orchestra with the university orchestra, forming the University-Civic Symphony. 

In 1999, Dr. Lonnie Klein was hired as music director/conductor for the LCSO.  During Dr. Klein’s tenure, the LCSO has evolved from a community orchestra into an organization of professional musicians from New Mexico, West Texas, and Southern Arizona. In this 21st season under the leadership of Maestro Klein, the LCSO continues to grow in professional strength and quality, as well as in creative and innovative concert productions. Each year the orchestra presents four pairs of classics concerts and a pop concert. The orchestra has premiered several new works by American composers and has been broadcast nationally on National Public Radio’s Performance Today on three separate occasions, bringing recognition and distinction to the Orchestra. Dr. Klein also has used his national and international connections to bring in accomplished guest artists from around the world.

The Las Cruces Symphony Association (LCSA) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), organization consisting of a Board of Directors, and managed by a professional staff. 


  • Provide artistic vision and musical leadership as music director and conductor for a professional regional orchestra with a $500,000 annual budget.
  • Conduct all rehearsals and performances for at least four (4) pairs of classics concerts and one pops concert.
  • Attract and retain quality musicians and audition new members as necessary along with orchestra audition panels.
  • Develop long-range artistic plans for the orchestra in conjunction with the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Participate in and support fundraising and community engagement.
  • Present pre-concert luncheon discussions the Thursday prior to each classics concert weekend.
  • Assist in the general promotion of the orchestra by being available for public appearances, radio, and press interviews.










  • Graduate music degree with 5 or more years of demonstrated experience in programming and conducting a professional orchestra.
  • Proven track record of success in audience development with an expressed commitment to creating and building a diverse community of music lovers.
  • A demonstrated commitment to innovative and engaging programming tailored to a diverse audience.
  • The comfort level and familiarity with fundraising and donor stewardship.
  • Readiness and ability to serve as the public face of the organization with a strong desire to become an integral part of the community.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Each of the four finalists will be brought in to conduct one concert cycle (including rehearsals) during the 2020-21 Season as an audition. The candidate chosen by the search committee will begin the position for the 2021-22 Season.
