* Mr. Ruben Smith, Principal Bassoon
Growing
up next door to his cousin who played trumpet, there was
no doubt that his dream was to become a musician. It wasn't
in the cards for him to play trumpet but rather the decision
was made to start on saxophone
at the age of 11.
Prior to going
to Junior High, it became obvious that there were too
many "good" saxophone players in order to make
the concert band. So his
band director suggested that he change instruments to
either bassoon or oboe. As it turned out, fate had it
that the bassoon was the instrument that he would ultimately
play the rest of his musical career.
|

|
| He
received the John Philip Sousa Award as a senior in High
School. He attended New Mexico State University on a music
scholarship and graduated as the top senior musician even
though his degree was in Accounting.
Upon graduating from New Mexico State
University he auditioned and was accepted as principal
bassoonist with the NORAD (North American Air Defense
Command) Band stationed in Colorado Springs, CO. During
his
tenure with the NORAD Band, he also auditioned and became
the principal bassoonist with the Colorado Springs Symphony.
Upon his return to Las Cruces, he joined
the El Paso Symphony and for 24 years once again took
up the role of principal bassoonist. Although he left
the Orchestra after being elected as the Mayor of Las
Cruces, he never , A
left behind his true passion of performing as a musician.
He was very fortunate when as Mayor, he was invited to
perform as a soloist with a Chamber Orchestra from the
Sister City in Germany. Shortly after that he turned his
attention back to the saxophone he loved so much and started
playing with the Big Band on the Rio Grande. Shortly thereafter
he was invited to play yet again as principal bassoonist
with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra where he has been
serving as such for the past 5 years.
He also plays saxophone with the Mike
Caranda Big Band Swing from El Paso. "It's like having
your cake and eating it too being principal bassoonist
in a Symphony and lead alto in a Big Band," says
Ruben. No matter where it was that Ruben went, where his
career took him, he always kept his childhood dreams close
to heart. He is and always will be a musician at heart.
